Investigating the Relationship between Mental Health and Academic Success of Students in Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical and Health Services

Introduction: Regarding the effect of mental health on students' and playing of an important role in furthering of educational status and prevention of their failure and dropout, this study aimed to evaluate undergraduate students' mental health and its relationship with academic achievement.

Methods: In a descriptive-analytic study, 210 undergraduate students from various majors of Ahvaz Jundishapur university of medical and health services(AJUMS)were selected through randomly classified process. The data collection tool was GHQ-28 questionnaire. Students' GPA of last semester was considered as their academic achievement. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency, mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (t-test, ANOVA and correlation coefficient).

 Results: Results showed that there is no significant difference in terms of statistical comparison between the mean scores of married or single students' mental health or different fields of study. However, significant differences between male and female students in terms of mental health provision was observed. Also there was a significant and reverse correlation between the mean scores of students' mental health questionnaire and academic achievement (R= 0.219, p <0.001). This means that an increase in mental health (lower overall score in test) increased mean scores of students (as an indicator of academic achievement).

Conclusion: According to results which was a significant correlation between mental health and academic achievement, it is necessary to further study the psychological problems of the students and to provide them psychological counseling centers.
